    Poetry Reading Shared Interest Group

    for an online discussion

The First Thursday of Every Month

from 6:30 to 8:00 pm Eastern

Free and open to all OLLI at BCC members

Do you love poetry or do you want to learn about poetry? If you do, consider joining our Poetry Reading SIG which meets monthly via Zoom.

The format of our meetings is flexible, and what has worked well so far is that at each meeting we decide upon a topic and a leader for the next meeting. The topics might range from the oeuvre of a particular poet or poetess, a particular style of poetry, or a particular period of poetry. Each participant is encouraged to submit one or two examples of the topic that interest them, and the job of the leader is to organize the order in which these poems will be read and discussed.

Please contact Steffi Fletcher for additional information and to receive the Zoom link.

    Play Reading Shared Interest Group

Meets Once or Twice a Month

from 3:00 to 5:00 pm Eastern

Free and open to all OLLI at BCC members

Do you love reading plays?  Our SIG gives participants a chance to read aloud and analyze scenes and characters from prize-winning plays.

We meet once or twice per month for two hours, usually on a Friday afternoon, so as not to conflict with other OLLI courses.  During the year we are open to suggestions as to which plays to read, while in the summer, when hopefully theatres will resume performances, we choose plays that we can both read and view.

We encourage our members to prepare and lead discussions on plays that interest them.  Thriving on group participation, we allow two sessions to cover each one.  Particular editions are selected that can be ordered online or from the Lenox Bookstore.

In the past our meetings have been in-person, but this year our group has been very successful on Zoom.  We hope to see you there!

Please email Barbara WaldingerKarel Fisher, or Alice Roth for additional information and to receive the Zoom link.

    Professor W. Anthony Sheppard on

Sondheim's Concepts - Company and Sunday in the Park with George

Saturday, July 9 at 11:00 am EDT

    In-person at the Berkshire Museum

39 South Street, Pittsfield, Mass. 01201

This event will not be recorded

Sondheim consistently claimed that the label "concept musical" was a bogus term, given that all musicals have ideas shaping their structure and songs.  However, Sondheim was being modest, as very few other musicals have such striking and novel ideas as his.  Many of his musicals developed from ideas that radically shaped and structured the show in ways that dramatically deviated from Broadway musical norms.  More astonishingly, despite their rather cerebral and bold concepts, his musicals consistently move us deeply, as they grapple with intense human emotions and relationships.  In considering his long and celebrated career, Company and Sunday in the Park with George stand out as unmatched exemplars of the full capacity of the Broadway musical.

    W. Anthony Sheppard is Marylin and Arthur Levitt Professor of Music at Williams College where he teaches courses in twentieth-century music, opera, popular music, and Asian music. He earned his B.A. at Amherst College and his M.F.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University. His first bookRevealing Masks: Exotic Influences and Ritualized Performance in Modernist Music Theater, received the Kurt Weill Prize, his article on Madam Butterfly and film earned the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award, an article on World War II film music was honored with the Alfred Einstein Award by the American Musicological Society, and "Puccini and the Music Boxes" received the AMS H. Colin Slim Award. His most recent book, entitled Extreme Exoticism: Japan in the American Musical Imagination, appeared i2019 and received the AMS Music in American Culture Award and the SAM Irving Lowens Book Award, and his edited volume, Sondheim in Our Time and His, appeared in 2022. Sheppard's research has been supported by the NEH, the American Philosophical Society, the ACLS, and the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Musicological Society and as Series Editor of AMS Studies in Music. In recognition of "excellence in teaching," Williams College named Sheppard the John Hyde Teaching Fellow for 2020-2023.

Admission is $10 for OLLI at BCC and Berkshire Museum members, and $15 for the general public.  Admission is free for Berkshire Community College students, youth 17 and under, and those holding WIC, EBT/SNAP, or ConnectorCare cards.

This event will not be recorded.

    Attention chamber music lovers!

The Listening to Chamber Music SIG is for people who are interested in chamber music and who would enjoy learning about and listening to chamber music repertoire with other chamber music aficionados.  The proposed format will be that the leader of each meeting will provide program notes about a piece, the group will listen together and then discuss what they think about the piece.  This is the proposed format, it is expected that the group will tweak it and decide together what works best and which chamber works will please our collective ear.

Please contact Harriet Wetstone if you are interested in this Listening to Chamber Music SIG and she will supply additional information and the Zoom link.

Mindfulness has many applications but is most associated with/as a meditation practice. The term mindfulness can be defined as a moment-to-moment awareness of one’s experience without judgment.

In a variety of ways, this practice can provide one with skills that allow greater equanimity, while being with both the struggles and the joys that arise in life. There is a lot of flexibility within the practice, making it compatible and adaptable within different lifestyles.

    New Creative Nonfiction Writing SIG

The kick-off meeting will be held on Zoom on

July 12 at 1:30 PM Eastern

Free and open exclusively to OLLI at BCC members

Do you love to write and want to have a writers’ group to share and critique your work? If you do, consider joining our Creative Nonfiction SIG which meets monthly via Zoom. The format of our meetings will be flexible but will focus on each member sharing their work and receiving mindful critique from other group members.  At each meeting we will pick a leader for the next meeting. That leader will assign a prompt for the next meeting’s writings or writers may choose their own subject.

What is creative nonfiction? It can be essay, memoir, personal narrative, travel writing, food writing, chronicle, fact-based essays, or biography. The commonality is that the writer uses literary techniques to tell the facts allowing the reader to understand the situations described in a fuller, more emotional way. As one writer — Melanie McGrath, whose book Silvertown, an account of her grandmother's life, describes her writing — the known facts of her stories are "the canvas on to which I have embroidered. Some of the facts have slipped through the holes—we no longer know them nor have any means of verifying them—and in these cases I have reimagined scenes or reconstructed events in a way I believe reflects the essence of the scene or the event in the minds and hearts of the people who lived through it. ... To my mind this literary tinkering does not alter the more profound truth of the story.”

Our first meeting is scheduled for July 12 at 1:30 PM Eastern.  Please click here for details and to get the Zoom link.

    OLLI's Contemporary Gender Roles

    Shared Interest Group

Meets online on the 3rd Wednesday of every month

    at

     2:00 PM Eastern

This OLLI Contemporary Gender Roles Shared Interest Group was started by Deborah Caine to study and explore cultural changes in the roles of men and women in the family and in the workplace and the multiple changes in gender presentation and identity exemplified in the growth of the LGBTQ+ communities; changes not always easily understood by many.

The group has grown over the last several years from three members to two dozen women and is actively seeking more male members who would enjoy the lively monthly discussions on topics of urgent and current interest.

Members volunteer to lead a discussion on a topic of their choice and/or invite an outside speaker and circulate articles from major newspapers, magazines and journals that are relevant to group interests.

Here is the schedule of topics until the end of the year:

7/20 at 2 pm Joanne Rogovin: Women Rising Around the World

8/17 at 2 pm Ellen Croibier and SIG members - A discussion of “Assume Nothing, a Story of Intimate Violence” by Tanya Selvaratnam

9/21 at 2 pm Dona Burdick - Helen Hamilton Gardener

10/19 at 2 pm Bernadette Brusco and SIG members - A discussion of Feminism at ages 16, 24, 50+

11/16 at 2 pm Deborah Caine - "The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love" by bell hooks

12/21 at 2p TBD SIG members Holiday Party with a 2022 review and 2023 preview

The Contemporary Gender group sponsored an OLLI course on the Equal Rights Amendment in 2018 which was well attended.

Rescuing an Afghan Music School From the Taliban: A Success Story

Saturday, July 23rd at 11:00am EDT

    Live at the Berkshire Museum

39 South Street, Pittsfield, Mass. 01201

This event will not be recorded

Founded in 2010 by Dr. Ahmad Sarmast, the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) is the first and only school of Afghan music, where talented Afghan children regardless of their gender, social circumstances and ethnic background are trained in a co-educational environment in Afghan traditional and Western classical music, while obtaining high quality academic general education. ANIM has a special focus on supporting the most disadvantaged members of Afghan society – orphans, street working children, women, and girls and its student body represents a mosaic of ethnicities from all parts of Afghanistan.

As the Taliban retook power in Afghanistan in August 2021, ANIM came under existential threat and its people were in mortal peril.  Friends of ANIM galvanized the support of the world community to rescue the school and its 273 community members and secure their safe passage to Portugal, where they have been offered group asylum by the government.

Two members of the board of Friends of ANIM, part-time Berkshires residents Lesley Rosenthal and Jessica Lustig, will speak about their roles in supporting the school's ambitions and rescuing it from peril.

Lesley Rosenthal is Chief Operating Officer and Corporate Secretary of The Juilliard School. Previously she served as EVP, General Counsel & Secretary of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. Rosenthal is the founding board president of Friends of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, which in 2021 galvanized international support for the rescue of all 273 members of the Afghan music school from peril at the hands of the Taliban. Rosenthal graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School. She was later elected by alumni worldwide to a six-year term on the Harvard University Board of Overseers, serving as Vice Chair of the board, chairing its Arts & Humanities committee. She is the author of the bestselling book, Good Counsel: Meeting the Legal Needs of Nonprofits (John Wiley & Sons 2012) and co-librettist of the jazz opera, Dear Erich, which is being presented at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center on August 6.

Jessica Lustig is founding partner and Managing Director of 21C Media Group, Inc. and Treasurer, Friends of ANIM.  With more than 30 years in the music business, Managing Director Jessica Lustig brings a global perspective to 21C. Clients have included Google, YouTube, the World Economic Forum, the Global Fund, the World Bank, and many technology start-ups working in the cultural sector. Among Ms. Lustig’s notable international marketing and consulting initiatives are conceiving and developing the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, advising the World Economic Forum on cultural leaders and major programs for its annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, and working with the Afghanistan National Institute of Music on touring and performances as well as its evacuation from Kabul and resettlement in Lisbon in 2021.  With an undergraduate degree in music and an MBA in International Business and Marketing from the Stern School of Business at New York University, Jessica brings a combination of musical knowledge and business acumen to 21C Media Group. She provides strategic planning and consulting services to businesses interested in strengthening their interactions with the world of arts and culture, as well as technology innovation in the arts through her work with many of the world’s leading concert artists, musical institutions and composers.

Please join us in honoring Linda Greenhouse for her contribution to lifelong learning and journalism.

What kind of future will the Supreme Court have after diverging so sharply from the public mood on abortion, guns, and perhaps other subjects as well such as the environment. What can we expect from this court?  Indeed, what do we as citizens have a right to expect from the Supreme Court? The majority on the Roberts court has driven it into unknown territory, with no obvious stopping point. There has never been a more important time to pay attention to the Supreme Court.

Ms Greenhouse will be selling and signing her book at the event.

Linda Greenhouse is a senior research scholar at Yale Law School. Before starting a second career at Yale in 2009, she was the Supreme Court correspondent for the Times for nearly 30 years, winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1998 for her coverage of the court, among other major journalism awards. She writes regularly on the court for the Times opinion pages and for other publications.

In her extracurricular life, she has served since 2017 as president of the American Philosophical Society, the nation’s oldest learned society; she is its first female president since the society’s founding by Benjamin Franklin in 1743. She has been a member of the Harvard University Board of Overseers and the national Senate of Phi Beta Kappa. She is an honorary member of the American Law Institute.

She is a graduate of Radcliffe College (Harvard) and earned a Master of Studies in Law degree from Yale Law School. Her most recent book, Justice on the Brink: The Death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Rise of Amy Coney Barrett, and Twelve Months that Transformed the Supreme Court, published in 2021, is her sixth. Others include a biography, Becoming Justice Blackmun; a personal memoir, Just a Journalist; and The Supreme Court: A Very Short Introduction, now in a second edition.

Admission is $10 for OLLI at BCC and Berkshire Museum members, and $15 for the general public.  Admission is free for Berkshire Community College students, youth 17 and under, and those holding WIC, EBT/SNAP, or ConnectorCare cards.

Pre-registration is required. Pregister safely and securely online or call 413.236.2190 (M-F 9am-4pm) to register by phone with a credit card.

Taking a break for the Summer - we'll meet again in the Fall!

    at the Lenox Community Center

65 Walker Street, Lenox, MA 01240

The Center is closed on major holidays.

Free and open exclusively to OLLI at BCC members

The Happy Needlers & Hookers Needlework Group is a Shared Interest Group for people that like to knit, needlepoint, cross-stitch, crochet  or enjoy any other "needle-based" craft.

The Lenox Community Center has again graciously given us a time slot to use their living room.  The difference this year is that all the furniture has been moved out because of children's activities that go on in that room.  We will have use of their folding chairs and a table if we wish. We will need to follow Lenox Community Center policies for wearing masks and social distancing.

You can work on any project you wish. The camaraderie and time we spend together is what we find so enjoyable.

One project idea we could work on is from an OLLI member in Reno Nevada. She has set up a project where her knitters and crocheters make hats, scarves and mittens for local homeless shelters.  I will be contacting shelters to see if this is something they would need.  We can provide patterns if you don’t have one.

All levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced.

Let Carolyn know if you will be joining us so we have an idea of how many will be attending.

We also invite you to check out our Photo Gallery on Flickr to see some of the projects we have been working on in the last few months.  Let us know if you have any photos you would like us to add to this album.

Please contact Carolyn Vandervort or Carol Sabot for more information and to let them know that you would like to attend.
