OLLI is pleased to announce longtime OLLI instructor James Kraft will lead a monthly group entitled Reading Willa Cather in Lenox starting on Sunday, October 8th at 3pm, and on the first Sunday of each month (except for February) through June 2018.  Reading Willa Cather is free for all OLLI members. (If you are not yet a member, please join to take part in this program by calling 413.236.2190 or join online here. You must be an OLLI member to attend.)

The subject is the novels and stories of one of the foremost American writers, Willa Cather. She is best known for several works about life on the plains, especially Nebraska. She wrote many other novels that focus on significant locations and key social issues. The locations include New York City, Chicago, Santa Fe, Pittsburgh, and a nineteenth century plantation in Virginia. The subjects are numerous and include woman’s role in the professions, the significance of music, the issues of adultery and homosexuality, the loss of the pioneer spirit, the importance of Native American and Hispanic cultures in the United States, and surprisingly an account of a female slave’s escape to Canada, a novel that Toni Morrison wrote about in Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination.  Cather is a formidable figure in American literature and rewards a serious reading.

Both her novels and short stories will be read and discussed. The stories are in Collected Stories, a Vintage paperback. My Mortal Enemy is also in a Vintage paperback.  All novels are also in the Library of America series.  The volumes are called Early Novels and Stories, and Later Novels.

The meeting dates and novels are listed below. The short stories will be assigned later.

    March 4               My Mortal Enemy
April 8                   Death Comes for the Archbishop
    May 6                   CANCELLED
June 2                   Sapphira and the Slave Girl

All meetings are on Sunday afternoons at 3pm in Lenox, Mass. Please contact the OLLI Office for the address.

Reading Willa Cather is led by longtime OLLI literature instructor James Kraft who attended Princeton, King’s College, Cambridge University, and Fordham.  He has a doctorate in literature and has taught at the University of Virginia, Université Laval in Quebec City, and Wesleyan in Connecticut.  He was assistant director of the Whitney Museum for eight years, and now teaches at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Berkshire Community College and at the New York Society Library in New York City.

Teaching for OLLI: A Free Course

Are you a volunteer OLLI instructor who would like to sharpen your skills, or an OLLI member who dreams of teaching an OLLI course some day? Join us in June for one or more classes on teaching for OLLI, taught by one of OLLI’s best instructors with decades of teaching experience. The course has four sessions and participants may take one or all of the sessions they think are appropriate. This class is free to all OLLI members.

Instructor Katherine Kidd has taught three courses for OLLI and loves crafting courses for OLLI students. Katherine earned her master’s at Harvard and her doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. She was honored as Teacher of the Year at Fairfield University where she directed the International Studies major.

All classes are held at Berkshire Community College, located at 1350 West Street in Pittsfield. To register, click here or call 413.236.2190. Pre-registration is required.

    Monday , June 4: 1:30 – 3pm

Session One: Teaching for OLLI 101 This session reviews the basics about the OLLI course structure, the instructor form, working with the A/V team, requests for assistance with marketing the course (interviews on radio and TV and the OLLI open house), flexibility in length of courses, variety of formats, enrollment limitation options, course evaluations etc.

    Monday , June 11: 1:30 – 3pm

Session Two: Teaching Adults in a Non-credit Environment Even experienced teachers may not have taught adults in an environment where there are only carrots and no sticks to encourage engagement. This session includes information about how adults learn differently from younger learners, successful methods for engaging adult learners, teaching strategies to avoid, ways to build in options for deeper engagement in the class, and more.

    Monday , June 18: 1:30 – 3pm

Session Three: Structuring a Course Most courses that OLLI instructors offer could be taught for a full semester or a year but OLLI semesters are traditionally 4 – 6 weeks. In this session, we will consider how to narrow and prioritize the material to share in a course. The goal will be to help participants find a good balance between depth and breadth when preparing their course materials. The option of planning a series of courses on one subjects, such as Greig Siedor’s courses on World War One, Richard Matturro’s series on Shakespeare’s plays, or Phil Halpern’s History of 20th Century Comedy series, will also be discussed.

    Monday , June 25: 1:30 – 3pm

Session Four: Sharing Teaching Plans In the final session, participants will have the option of sharing ideas for how they would like to structure their course and to get feedback from each other, experienced OLLI instructors, and curriculum committee members.

    Music Changes the Brain
    A Neuroscientist's View

     Paul Lennard, Ph.D.
Director of the Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology Program at Emory University

    Saturday, June 9th, 3pm
    Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield

Playing an instrument or listening to music can morphologically and functionally change our brains, both in the short term and long term. Exposure to music and music training early in life can alter brain development, and there is evidence that the brains of musicians are different from those of non-musicians. Join us for a fascinating science-based discussion on how music changes the brain.

Paul Lennard received his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis and was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University. Since 1979 Dr. Lennard has taught in the Biology Department at Emory University, Atlanta, where he has been the Director of the Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology Program since its inception in 1997. He has traveled to India as a Sager Foundation Fellow to teach neuroscience to Tibetan Monks. His current interest in the musical brain has been catalyzed by his marriage to Cecylia Arzewski, a former member of the BSO, Cleveland Orchestra, and concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony. Dr. Lennard is a recipient of the Emory Williams Distinguished Teaching Award for Natural Sciences and the Emory Neuroscience Initiative’s “Courage to Inspire Award.”

Join us for the third lecture in OLLI's 2018 Distinguished Speakers Series. Tickets may be ordered online by clicking here, over the phone at 413.236.2190, or are available at the door: $10 for OLLI and Berkshire Museum members; $15 for the general public; free for youth 17 & under and BCC students. By LUCAS HNATH

    Directed by JOE CALARCO

In the final scene of Ibsen’s 1879 ground-breaking masterwork, Nora Helmer makes the shocking decision to leave her husband and children and begin a life on her own. A Doll’s House, Part 2 dares to wonder what Ibsen’s Nora has been up to since she slammed the door. Called “the best play of the year” by The New York Times, this uproarious comedy explores the emotional chaos that results when Nora returns 15 years later to the family she left behind. “An explosively funny new play,” says The Hollywood Reporter…delivers “huge rolling laughs, one after the other, for 90 ceaselessly entertaining minutes.”

    *Contains strong language.

    Mothers and Sons

"Fantastic! McNally captures a moment of hope and promise…MOTHERS AND SONS feels like the sun on your face!”
    —NBC New York.

"A wonderful Hamlet on his way to becoming a great one" is how Cal describes his deceased lover, Andre when Katherine, Andre's mother, shows up unexpectedly on his doorstep. In this funny and moving piece Tony Award winning playwright Terence McNally's sharp dialogue illustrates how reconciling loss and transgression can reveal the enduring nature of love.

"A MASTERPIECE! Terrence McNally is one of the greatest contemporary playwrights the theatre world has yet produced. MOTHERS AND SONS is profound. Heartbreaking. Triumphant."
    —NY Observer.
