Marlowe’s play, which prefigures Shakespeare’s Richard II, is a great example of what was then a new genre—the early modern history play. Edward’s elevation of his lowborn favorite threatens the nobles who surround him. Shifting alliances lead to the downfall of this 14th century king, murdered by confederates of his queen and her lover, and ends with their subsequent reckoning with Edward III, his heir. An explosive combination of the personal and the political is brought to life in this fascinating but little seen play.

Ann Berman holds a Master of Arts in Shakespeare Studies from King’s College, London.  She spent 30 years as a teacher and administrator at the Dover-Sherborn Public Schools and 8 years as a course facilitator at Lifelong Learning at Regis College in Weston, Mass. She has taught several Shakespeare courses for OLLI at BCC.
