Salvete Omnes! There is too much hate in the world these days so for my Latin class this winter, I chose love! “…the Elegiac lover joins Cupid’s army, brandishes his weapons, and wages his own wars in the boudoir.” So, let us “escape for a moment into Ovid’s Fantasyland where real wars and violence are bid farewell…” (Richard A. LaFleur) We will translate selections of Ovid’s Amores and one love story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Our cares left behind we will cherish the witty, beautiful, and universal love poetry of Ovid. The only requirement is having had some contact with Latin. No worries, no pressure. You will be carefully guided through the beauty of Ovid’s poetry with the goal of enjoyment and appreciation.

Suggested Reading: We will be using the text, Ovid Amores Metamorphoses, Charbra Adams Jestin & Phyllis B. Katz, (Amazon) however, any text will be fine. Feel free to contact me with questions and concerns: jamiekeller54@gmail.com

Since Jamie can’t seem to get Latin out of her heart, she is delighted to have the opportunity to teach Latin with OLLI. Course numbers are typically small but the enthusiasm is high.  Jamie Keller has a master’s degree in classics from Washington University and completed everything but my dissertation at SUNY Albany. A Latin teacher at Lenox High School for many years, she is extremely proud of the exchange program she initiated in 1995 between her students and those from Gubbio, Italy. After a hiatus during COVID, Italian students finally returned in September 2023. Latin was on the chopping block this year and Jamie is delighted to report that with the voices of past and current teachers at Lenox, former students and concerned community members saved the program. Latin lives at Lenox! Jamie is currently a docent at the Norman Rockwell Museum. she starts her day with an hour-long dog walk as she listens to Italian and talk to her dog Cleopatra in Italian! Obviously one of her interests is studying Italian. Jamie also loves to swim, read and travel.
