This course is a survey of sculptural representations of the human form dating from the 50th Century BCE through the 20th Century CE. Beginning with Stone Age ceramics from Mesopotamia, progressing in time and place around the world to bronzes made in China, ivories from Egypt, marble statues from Greece and Rome, gold from Ecuador, terracotta works from Africa and Iran, figures sculpted in medieval, renaissance, and baroque periods in Europe, and finally, to the modern era, participants will be introduced to iconic and less known sculptures from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Colta Ives is a longtime summer resident of Monterey, MA. Curator Emerita of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ives prepared numerous exhibitions (and their catalogues) on European artists. She taught seminars at Columbia University, her alma mater, and NYU. Her interest in sculpture, and especially Asian and ancient art, developed since her retirement in 2008.
