This course is offered online via the easy-to-use Zoom program.
Christine Casey will lead the participants into an in-depth exploration of six of the great operas. Each of the six class sessions will delve into one of the great operas, complete with a brief biography of the composer and librettist, and will feature a slideshow highlighting significant scenes, as well as audio excerpts of the significant and memorable arias, taken from recordings. The course will present Bizet’s Carmen, whose arias are among the most well-known, Verdi’s La Traviata, Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Gounod’s Faust, Puccini’s La Boehme and Lehar’s The Merry Widow.
Christine Casey, who recently relocated to Williamstown with her husband, holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Music Education from Northwestern University, and taught Vocal and General Music in the suburban Chicago public schools for 35 years, the last 29 of which were as the Fine Arts Department Chair and Choral Director at Fenton High School in Bensenville, Illinois. Following retirement, she worked as a volunteer at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in their Education Department, and as a member of their community lecturer program for 8 years, then continuing for 6 more as an independent opera lecturer to Chicago-area libraries, retirement homes and the Northwestern University OLLI classes. She has been a professional singer, and still participates in church choirs.
