Join us for a survey of the history of the FBI from its origins in 1908 to former Director Comey’s comments on Hillary Clinton’s emails just prior to the 2016 U.S presidential election. We will especially focus on J. Edger Hoover’s career as the FBI’s director from 1924 until his death in 1972.

Hoover had a benevolent public face for his congressional supporters and the press, but it was through his voluminous secret files that he wielded power. He passed along information from FBI files to help Senator Nixon during the McCarthy hearings and misinformation about Ronald Reagan that enabled him to become Governor.

Alan Rubin has taught a variety of courses for OLLI, including, most recently, Women Spies and Codebreakers. He owned and operated an independent retail business in New York City for four decades, as chronicled in his daughter Jen Rubin’s book, We Are Staying: Eighty Years in the Life of a Family, a Store, and a Neighborhood. He mentors many in the local community including BCC students, small businesses, and Taconic High School students.
