Ask any Nia Technique practitioner to describe Nia and you will get a number of answers. More than just a workout, Nia is a powerful fusion of dance, martial arts and mindfulness practices, a holistic movement and wellness practice addressing each aspect of your life, body, mind, and soul. Done to eclectic music, Nia is fun with rewarding results you will experience immediately. Everyone can do Nia because the movements are so adaptable to varying skill and fitness levels.  We believe movement can be pleasurable to the body, and when we move towards pleasure we move towards healing.

Instructor Diane Firtell has been practicing Nia since 1995 and teaching Nia since 1997. She immediately fell in love with the freedom of expression, the playfulness, the attention to detail and the possibility of growing stronger and more flexible.  Finally, an end to exercise as punishment!  She understood from the beginning that the movements practiced in Nia, along with its philosophy, were something she could practice for the rest of her life. Prior to COVID she taught in numerous studios in the Berkshires and beyond and for over 16 years taught multiple weekly classes at Canyon Ranch.  She currently teaches virtually.

Diane enjoys the creative process of performing and is a member of CATA’s People’s Tap Company and Stefanie Weber’s Creatures of Habitat. When she is not practicing Nia she spends much of her time making  art, which can be viewed here.
