Six Sessions

This course is offered online via the free, easy-to-use Zoom program.

This course will examine several of the most important legal questions that have come to the fore in the United States during this worldwide health crisis.  As ever here in America, the courts and constitutional law have been central to arguments over the ballot, over race relations, over the media and free speech, over health care and economic inequality, over civil rights protections, over federalism and emergency powers—and of course over the reach and discretion of the president’s powers (together with the passivity or paralysis of the Congress) in national and international affairs.  Each week we will look at one or two major cases on these issues.

Tom Gerety holds a JD and PhD from Yale University.  He was Dean of the College of Law, University of Cincinnati, President of both Trinity College and Amherst College, Executive Director and Brennan Professor at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law School; Collegiate Professor of Law and Humanities, NYU, and author of The Freshman Who Hated Socrates.
