W106 | The Hebrew Prophets - Changing the World by Speaking Truth to Power | R. Howard Jaffe Wednesday - 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. Zoom |
From crying out to help the poor and disenfranchised to soaring visions of what was necessary to create peace in times of great turmoil and upheaval, the Hebrew Prophets changed the course of human history, and are still quoted (and misquoted) today. They proclaimed messages of equality and justice against the rich and the entitled, in favor of the poor, the sick, the dispossessed, the aliens and the refugees. We will explore the context in which they took the stage, and of course, the messages that they delivered, as well as the language and imagery they employed, all with an eye towards understanding the incalculable impact they had and continue to have thousands of years later. Rabbi Howard L. Jaffe received rabbinic ordination and a Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, the seminary of the Jewish Reform movement in America. He spent four decades as a congregational rabbi, most recently at Temple Isaiah in Lexington, Massachusetts. He has been a guest lecturer at St. John Vianney (preparatory) Seminary and the St. Paul Seminary, and has been a member of the faculty of Macalester College and the University of St. Thomas, both in St. Paul, Minnesota. He has been a frequent guest speaker at many churches, and has taught dozens of adult education classes throughout his career. |
