Patient Safety: How to Avoid Being Harmed by Healthcare

with Dr. Paul Gluck, Founding Member and Past Chair of the Board of the National Patient Safety Foundation

Saturday, June 3rd, 2pm
Berkshire Museum

Join us for another fascinating discussion in OLLI's 2017 Distinguished Speakers Series. According to the most recent estimates, deaths from medical error may now account for over 250,000 victims annually. Why does this still continue to be a problem and what can you do to prevent yourself or a loved one from being one of those statistics?  This presentation will discuss difficulty in precisely measuring this problem, why medical errors happen and the importance of being an informed and engaged patient.

Dr. Paul Gluck received his B.S. degree in Life Sciences at MIT and his M.D. degree at NYU School of Medicine.  He completed his post-graduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Miami School of Medicine where he remains on the voluntary faculty as Associate Clinical Professor. In 2010, after retiring from clinical practice, he completed a Patient Safety Fellowship in the Department of Anesthesia at the same institution.

Dr. Paul Gluck is a Founding Member and Past Chair of the Board of the National Patient Safety Foundation as well as the Council for Patient Safety in Women’s Healthcare.  He has also served in leadership roles with several professional societies. Dr. Gluck was Director of the ACOG Voluntary Review for Quality of Care Program and chaired their Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee.

His honors include Communicator of the Year from the Florida Medical Association, the Distinguished Service Award from the Florida OB/GYN Society, the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Florida Perinatal Network, President’s Community Service Award from ACOG and distinguished alumni awards from MIT and NYU School of Medicine.

After retiring from clinical practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Gluck has devoted his energies to teaching and research in the field of patient safety. He has written 6 text book chapters, 18 articles in peer reviewed journals and made over 250 presentations across the U.S. and overseas dealing with patient safety and quality improvement.  He conducted patient safety workshops for professionals at the invitation of the healthcare agencies and governments of Australia, China and Saudi Arabia. He also developed 3 web-based learning modules on patient safety.  He currently is editing a textbook of Patient Safety in OB/GYN to be published by Cambridge University Press as well as a monograph on patient safety for Elsevier Publishers.
