Combining literature, geography, and history, Lisa Brooks explores the way in which Native Americans of New England used their understanding of language and writing, to learn about European settler culture, to negotiate treaties, and to advocate for their rights including in the Berkshires in the 18th and 19th centuries. Henry S. Poler '59 Presidential Teaching Professor of English and American Studies at Amherst College, Brooks is from the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi in Vermont. Brooks brings the history and landscape of New England alive as she documents the complex ways the Wabanaki and other Native Americans lived and continue to live in New England.

Katherine Kidd, OLLI instructor and chair of the University Days committee, will lead the book discussion groups. A retired university professor, Kate brings her love of history and her knowledge of interactions among diverse cultural groups to the reading of this book.

Books will be available at The Bookstore in Lenox, MA.

We may add extra in person sessions if overwhelming interest is shown. In person meetings will be at Shakespeare & Company.
