Five Sessions

How do composers ‘invent’ music? What specifically is a ‘musical idea’ and from where does it emanate? This course will explore how musical structure is conceived, both on the small and large scale, along with the role musical instruments and virtuoso performers play in inspiring composers. Through examining several masterpieces from a composer’s perspective, we’ll investigate how these determining factors inspire innovative and lasting works of art.

Note—this course is free to any OLLI member who is also a Sweetwood resident.

Stephen Dankner holds a DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) from The Juilliard School (1971). He is a composer of chamber, vocal and symphonic music for 60 years.
