There are many hot topics confronting us in today’s world. This course will focus on six and present two advocates of differing views on each, followed by a give and take between the presenters and course participants. The topics are: Affirmative Action, Sexual Harassment, The Impact of Tax Cuts, Is the Media Fair? Public Schools vs. Charter Schools, and Will Robots Take Our Jobs Away. Join us for a spirited and provocative examination of these important “hot” topics. Moderated by Will Singleton.

September 20 • Affirmative Action: Leticia S. E. Haynes, Vice President for Institutional Diversity and Equity at Williams College and Virginia E. O’Leary, Ph.D., professor emerita at Auburn University 

September 27 • Sexual Harassment: Eden-Renee Hayes, Ph.D. Dean of Equity and Inclusion and professor of psychology at Bard College at Simon’s Rock and Lisa Whitney, former Vice President & General Counsel at VF Sportswear 

October 4 • Corporate Tax Reform: Austin Brazee, CPA and TBA 

October 11 • Public Schools/Charter Schools:
 Jason McCandless, Superintendent of Pittsfield Public Schools and Jay White, Executive Director, BART Charter School 

October 18 • The Future of Jobs: TED Talks 

October 25 • Is the Media Fair? Chris Guidette, retired journalist and public relations professional, and Shawn McIntosh, professor of journalism at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts

Will Singleton holds an M.A. from Georgetown University and an Ed.D. from New York University. He retired as Superintendent of Schools in Roosevelt, NY, after a long career in education. Upon his return to Pittsfield, where he grew up, he worked to reinvigorate the Berkshire Chapter of the NAACP. He has had a lifelong interest in Asian martial arts, earning a black belt in karate at the age of sixty. He serves on the OLLI at BCC Board of Directors, the OLLI Social Science Curriculum Committee and the OLLI Strategic Planning Committee.
