of flat points on a surface. 2) Analyzing the length of the Kasparov /Deep Blue chess

match. 3) Tiling certain regions with L-shaped trominoes. 4) Comparing high school mile

records with 1600 meter records. 5) Relating the sums of two infinite series to the sum of

their averages.

Marshall Ash is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at DePaul University. Earning his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1966, he taught at DePaul University for 45 years. He continues to do collaborative mathematical research. He enjoys weekly bike rides, reading the classics and viewing movies, theater and Yankee games.
