OLLI at BCC Calendar of Events & Programs

OLLI at BCC offers a wide variety of programs and events that combine fascinating learning opportunities with the chance to meet interesting, active people.

The Distinguished Speaker Series brings noted scholars and experts to our members, their guests and the general community.  Lectures are offered most months and cover a wide variety of topics including history, current events, art, literature, politics and more.  Look for emails about these lectures and/or visit the OLLI website.

University Days are offered throughout the year, which present a series of symposiums featuring guest speakers, breakout panels and curated lunch conversations.  Themes have included the culture of aging, criminal just reform, sports & culture, women’s suffrage, and many more.  While these events are open to the public, OLLI members receive a steep discount on admission!

All of our events and programs are organized by our members. Interested in helping? Contact the OLLI Office at 413.236.2190 about joining an OLLI committee.

The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents

    Roberta McCulloch-Dews on

The Policing of Black People in Public Spaces:

An Old Trend That Legislation Has the Power to Stop

    Saturday, April 25, 2020
    3:00pm
    Berkshire Museum

39 South Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201

2018 saw a rash of troubling incidents in which law enforcement was called to investigate bystander accounts of black men, women, and children occupying public and community spaces. These accounts were not based on the witnessing of actual crimes or offenses, but rather a suspicion on the part of the caller. The unifying factor is that the calls were made by white individuals.

The mobilization of law enforcement for unfounded nuisance calls is not only a diversion of public resources, but perpetuates the weaponization of police against black people, actions that date back to this country’s origins. This talk presents the historical framework surrounding the policing of black Americans in the United States; explores the role of bias; and highlights how legislation can play a major part in addressing discriminatory behavior.

Roberta McCulloch-Dews serves as Director of Administrative Services in the Office of the Mayor for the City of Pittsfield and is a communications professional with two decades of experience. She is a member of the Equity and Diversity Committee for the Central Berkshire Regional School District and a youth mentor with the Rites of Passage Empowerment Program (R.O.P.E). She hold a Masters of Public Policy from SUNY Empire State.

Admission is $10 for OLLI at BCC and Berkshire Museum members, and $15 for the general public. Tickets are also available at the door.

Youth, college students, and participants in the Card to Culture program (EBT, WIC or ConnectorCare cardholders) may attend at no charge, but must pre-register.  Forum credit is available for BCC students.

    Breathless (À bout de souffle)

A Foreign Language Film Shared Interest Group Gathering

This month we are watching Breathless (À bout de souffle), a 1960 film written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Though not the first, Breathless has been credited as being the most passionate and important film of the French New Wave movement. It made French actor Jean Paul Belmondo an international star and American Actress Jean Seberg, barely 21 at the time, a movie sensation.

New Wave cinema, which spurned established film conventions, is seen by many historians and critics as one of the most influential movements in the history of cinema and Godard as one of the most innovative directors since D.W. Griffith and Orson Welles. Critics have traced a direct line from Breathless to Bonnie and Clyde, Badlands and the youth upheaval of the late 1960s, and have said that characters played by Pacino, Beatty, Nicholson and Penn are directly descended from Belmondo's casually indifferent killer, Michel. Breathless is 90 minutes long.

    Monday April 27th
