After a period of significant accomplishments in many Latin American countries, things took a turn for the worse in the last few years. Focusing on Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina and Chile, this course will seek to explain this deterioration and its implications for these countries and for United States policy toward the region. Venezuela as a “failed” state; Bolsonaro’s right-wing populism in Brazil; the return of the Peronists to power in Argentina; and the massive political demonstrations that rocked Chile will be extensively covered.
